Houston Municipal Airport Terminal Building turns 83!
The Houston Municipal Airport Terminal Building opened Sept. 28, 1940 at Hobby Airport. The art deco building was designed by architect Joseph Finger, who also designed Houston City Hall, and was built with Public Works Administration funds. The terminal building was the only commercial air terminal in Houston until 1954 and is one of few surviving examples of classic art deco airport architecture from the 1940s.
The building is now home to the 1940 Air Terminal Museum, which will celebrate the building’s pivotal moment in aviation history throughout September.
